INYT – Ted Cruz Wins Republican Caucuses in Iowa. Cruz, powered by a surge of support from evangelical Christians, dealt a humbling loss to Donald J. Trump in the Iowa caucuses on Monday, throwing into question the depth of support for Mr. Trump’s unconventional candidacy.

BBC EuropeEU’s Donald Tusk to unveil proposed UK reform deal. A draft deal to meet David Cameron’s EU reform demands – including new powers for national parliaments to block unwanted laws – will be unveiled later. European Council President Donald Tusk will publish the text shortly.

FRANCE

Le MondePrimaries in Iowa : Clinton claims victory over Sanders, Ted Cruz crowned. After months of campaigning , the candidates for the US presidential submitted themselves , Monday, February 1 , to the verdict of Iowa voters , the first to vote in the country.

Les Echos – Cruz beats Trump, Hilary snatches victory. For the Republicans for the Democrats as the Iowa caucuses reserved unpleasant surprises for the big teams . Huge disappointment for Donald Trump : Senator Ted Cruz took the lead in the race for the Republican nomination , winning the first primary in the country, in Iowa.

GERMANY

Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ)Who chose whom in the primaries in Iowa. Despite driving snow, participation in the Iowa caucuses was very high . The Democrats benefited from the presence of an outsider , the Republicans a candidate that followed the party line .

Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ)The Republicans will rally behind Rubio. Considering the number of delegates that Iowa is in the party election days on which Democrats and Republicans officially determine their presidential candidates , the weight of the state in the Midwest of the United States is minimal

ITALY

La Repubblica USA primary, surprise in Iowa : Cruz beats Trump , Hillary has the measure of Sanders. The vote in the small state in the Midwest. Polls were misleading. Right favorite Trump slips almost one third , whilst there was a virtual tie for the Democrats.

El Pais – Unemployment rises in January as Christmas season comes to close. Jobless claims up by 57,247, while Social Security system loses 204,043 contributors.

UK

The Times – Boris tirade exposes Tory rifts on EU reform plan. Boris Johnson today blew Tory divisions over David Cameron’s European Union renegotiation into the open, claiming concessions won from Brussels were “not enough” to take to a referendum. The mayor of London, tipped as a leading contender to succeed Mr Cameron in Downing Street, spoke out against a proposed “red card” system for vetoing EU policies that would be handed to the British parliament under the terms of a deal.
