BBC Europe – Miracle needed to advance talks, says Juncker. It would take a “miracle” for Brexit talks to progress quickly enough to persuade the EU to start discussing trade soon, a top official has said. EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker agreed progress had been made between the two sides this week. But asked if it was enough to persuade the EU to agree to open trade talks, as the UK wants, at a summit next month, he replied only if “miracles happen”.

THE FAR EAST TO BE SUPPORTED AT THE EXPENSE OF SAKHALIN
At the initiative of Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Trutnev, who oversees the Far East, the government is going to take off tens of billions of rubles a year from Sakhalin to the federal budget. It is a large part of the taxes that the region receives from the “Sakhalin-1” and “Sakhalin-2” projects. The funds can be directed for the additional capitalisation of the Far East Development Fund and, possibly, to other entities of this federal district. This approach reflects the changed attitude to the needs of the Far East, which is forced to find internal resources in the context of the ongoing fiscal consolidation. |
