BBC Europe –  Trump readies for ‘robust’ G7 summit in Sicily. US President Donald Trump will attend a G7 summit with leaders of the world’s major economies in Sicily, Italy, on the last leg of his first foreign trip. A tough debate is expected on issues including trade and climate change. Four of the group’s leaders – including Mr Trump and British Prime Minister Theresa May – will be sitting around the table for the first time.

GERMANY

 German police raid Audi HQ over emissions fraud

For Volkswagen, Audis embattled parent company, the emissions-cheating scandal now reaches a new, dramatic level. Officers and prosecutors have searched offices at Audi headquarters in the Bavarian city of Ingolstadt, as well as offices in other German states.

ITALY

 Soldiers and policemen knifed in Milan central station

At 8pm on Thursday evening, a 20-year-old man stabbed a police officer and two soldiers in Milan’s Central Station. The young man, an Italian-Tunisian who had previously been arrested for drug trafficking, turned on the officers during a routine check. He was later charged with attempted murder. According to investigators, the assailant had begun to display fundamentalist leanings.

SPAIN

Spain plans to reinforce security measures at sports events and concerts

After reviewing details of the recent suicide attack at a pop concert in Manchester, Spain’s Interior Ministry has decided to keep the country’s terrorism threat level at 4, the second highest. This level was activated in June 2015 in the wake of attacks in Tunisia, France and Kuwait, and means increased monitoring of critical infrastructure such as airports, nuclear power plant and travel hubs

Eide calls a halt to shuttle diplomacy, no clear way forward

“Without a prospect for common ground, there is no basis for continuing this shuttle diplomacy,” he said in a short announcement.

Eide said he had on Friday morning the two leaders accordingly, and the ambassadors of the five Permanent Members of the Security Council in a joint meeting.  He will now inform the Secretary-General and seek his advice on the way forward, he said.

Bomb blast targets former Greek PM Papademos’ car; one injury reported

An explosion targeting the car of former Greek prime minister and central banker Lucas Papademos was reported on Thursday afternoon, at roughly 6.30 p.m. local time, in central Athens.

One injury was reported, with the first indications pointing to the vehicle’s driver. No word was available on whether Papademos was in the car at the time of the blast.

Trump Calls for Probe After British Complaints of Manchester Investigation Leaks

President Donald Trump, already angry about leaks from U.S. intelligence agencies, has called for an investigation into how sensitive information the British shared with key allies on the Manchester terror bombing ended up in news reports.
