Came out, but did not withdraw

On Tuesday thousands of journalists gathered in Barcelona, but the chief European sensation did not take place. The government of Catalonia declared the readiness to become an independent republic, but the formal separation from Spain was immediately suspended in order to be able to start a dialogue with Madrid, mediated by the EU. Speaking in the regional parliament, Chairman of the Catalonian government Carles Puigdemont announced it. From his lengthy speech it was still unclear what future is in store for Barcelona.
