EUROPEAN HEADLINES 

FT EuropeMarket sell-off as fresh Draghi bid to boost growth disappoints. ECB cuts rate to historic low and extends QE. Equities and bonds slide as euro gains.

WSJEECB move disappoints markets. Central Bank’s stimulus efforts fall short of investor expectations, hammering stocks.

INYT – Mass killing in US occur on average every day. Experts fiercely debate whether such shootings have been increasing.

BBC Europe – Syria conflict: German MPs vote for anti-IS military mission. MPs approved the plan for a German non-combat role by 445 votes to 146. Tornado jets – for reconnaissance – a naval frigate and 1,200 soldiers will be sent to the region.

FRANCE

Le MondeThe French National Front strengthens its position in all regions. The National Front will reportedly lead in six regions in the first round of the regional elections and could possibly win in four regions. The score will be tight with the right wing in Normandy.

Les Echos Taxes, unemployment: two French records. Unemployment rate at its highest level since 1997, a hard blow to the French government. France remains world champion in terms of compulsory levies, according to the OECD.

GERMANY

Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ)Massacre in California may be a terrorist attack. One of the offenders said to have had contact with international terror suspects.

Sueddeutsche Zeitung (SD)Greece threatened with expulsion from the Schengen area. EU partners do not want to accept anymore, how Athens leaves refugees freely cross the EU borders.

ITALY

La RepubblicaThe ECB cuts its rates and deludes stock markets. The European Central Bank Director Mario Draghi announced the extension of QE until 2017. Markets plummet, Milan -2.47%.

Il Sole 24 OreDraghi extends QE programme, stocks react negatively. The ECB President Mario Draghi announced yesterday the extension of the quantitative easing programme until March 2017, up from September 2016, with the inclusion of local government bonds.

POLAND

Gazette WyborczaUnyielding Constitutional Court. The Constitutional Court ruled that last term’s Sejm appointed three Judges in a constitutional way and violated the Constitution when appointing two other judges. The President of Poland has to swear in the three Judges immediately.

SPAIN

El PaisLaunch of the most plural and open electoral campaign in Spanish democracy. According to CIS, the PP is 8 percentage points ahead of the PSOE in the polls, and 9 points ahead of Ciudadanos.

ExpansionGas Natural to bid for the Australian Pacific Hydro. Gas Natural and its partner KIO submitted a public offer amounting to €1.5 billion.
