EUROPEAN HEADLINES

FTRussian air strikes on Syrian targets raise tensions with US. Initial attacks away from Isis-held areas. Nations jostle to impose influence in Mideast.

WSJERussia launches strikes in Syria. Moscow claims it hit Islamic State, but other Assad opponents targeted.

BALTIC STATES

Baltic Times – Grybuaskaite rebukes neo-Stalinist Putin at the UN.  Grybauskaite added the speech was characterised by “rhetoric we heard almost 100 years ago.”

FRANCE

Le MondeHollande does not choose between stimulating growth and austerity in the 2016 budget. The 2016 budget, which was presented on Wednesday, will be the last complete one during Mr Hollande’s five-year term.

Lea EchosFrance is Europe’s black sheep on deficit. Next year’s deficit is still set to exceed the 3% threshold. Civil servants’ staff on the rise again. Lower taxes for companies but not for households.

GERMANY

Frankfurter AllgemeineRussia launches airstrikes in Syria. Putin says Russia is supporting Syrian army in fighting terrorist groups.

Sueddeutsche ZeitungRussian aircrafts attack Syrian spots. According to the Kremlin, the attacks are meant to fight the Islamic state; however, the moderate Syrian opposition claims they have been targeted.

ITALY

La RepubblicaNew Senate: the first results come through. The battle has started. The Senate has started voting on amendments for constitutional reform in a tense ambience riddled with insults.

Il Sole 24 OreStock markets and bonds back up thanks to deflation effect. Deflation is back in Europe, with prices down 0.1% in September. Markets are counting on an increase in quantitative easing from the ECB.

POLAND

Gazeta Wyborcza – Kremlin’s brother-help to Assad. Russia started raids in Syria but the bombing target is not clear. Russia asked US Air Forces not to fly over Syria but the Americans do not intent to respect the promise.

SPAIN

El PaisRussian planes attack Syria and the US acts in Afghanistan. Moscow intervenes in defense of El Assad while Washington intends to slow down the Taliban’s’ progression in the North.

ExpansionCorporate summit in the Basque country. Urkullu promises stability to the Basque companies.

UK

The TimesPutin defies West with strikes on Syrian rebels. Raids risk pouring gasoline on fire, says White House.

The GuardianRussia sends bombers and raises stakes in Syria. Missiles aimed at Isis equipment, claims Moscow. At least 20 dead as residential areas destroyed. US and UK raise questions over intention of raid.
